Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.
Break down:
Enjoy your dreams
Because if dreams die
Life will be broken (messed up)
You will not be able to succeed
Enjoy your dreams
Because when dreams disappear
Life will be pointless
Messed up and broken.
Summary:
This poem is saying enjoy your dreams and ideas in life because when they leave life will become messed up and boring. Your dreams give you a gateway to imagine and to explore without these you will surly be just another mind. This poem brings this point across when it says "Life is a broken-winged bird, That cannot fly" It also talks about a barren field, a barren field is a field which cannot grow. When Hughes says this as a metaphor for life being pointless.
"Life is a barren field"- Barren means you cannot produce. When he is talking about barren fields he means that in life without dreams you will not be able to grow as a person and expand.
"Life is a broken-winged bird" In this quote she uses flying as a metaphor. Flying in the voices eyes means to succeed and to grow as a person. If you are a broken-winged bird you cannot fly or you struggle to fly. This meaning that if dreams were to disappear you will struggle to move forward in life, struggle to expand.
"Hold fast to dreams" This quote means keep your dreams with you, do not loss them. For if you loss them you will loss part of yourself.
of your life.
Personal Reflection: This is my favorite poem that i have read while in class. I say this because it makes you think and i like
how it uses metaphors and similes. It makes you think and really makes you see beyond the text.
